Swiss Grid

Swiss Coordinates and more

Coordinate calculations within three different coordinate systems (2 different WGS84 schemes and CH1903). Location services support including information about speed, course, altitude and more.

With Swiss Grid it's really easy to perform coordinate transformations from WGS84 format to CH1903 and vice versa. If you like, you can activate the "Locate Me" mode which will take the input from your current location. For your convenience, more information about your current location are provided: speed, altitude, course and position accuracy.

App Details

Swiss Grid works in 2 different modes: "Manual" and "Locate Me".

In manual mode, Swiss Grid supports calculations from and to three different coordinate system schemes: WGS84 (DMS, Degrees, Minutes, Seconds), WGS84 (Decimal Degrees) and CH1903 "Swiss Grid".

Unlike most lots of other coordination calculation applications, "Swiss Grid" utilizes precise formulae for its calculations rather than approximate solutions. Specifically, this means that a transformation from scheme X to scheme Y and then back from scheme Y to scheme X will not lose any of its precision.

In "Locate Me" mode, input is taken directly from the location services. Information about your current position, altitude, course and location accuracy is displayed.

Furthermore, there are additional options like sending emails with your current position or directly display your position on wellknown map websites.

Manual Mode

  • Calculate between WGS84 Decimal Degrees, WGS84 Degrees Minutes Seconds and CH1903 Swiss Grid Coordinates
  • Very intuitive user interface
  • Whatever part of a coordinate system scheme you change, the other schemes will instantly update their display
  • "Special": Our number keyboard features a unique "Done Button" to make user interaction even easier

Locate Me Mode

  • Instantly see your current position
  • Display is continuously updated in all three supported coordinate systems
  • Additional information: altitude, speed, course, vertical and horizontal location accuracy, age of last fix

Features

  • reversible and precise coordinate calculations
  • display of current position
  • display of current speed, course, altitude
  • display of horizontal and vertical location accuracy
  • intuitive and polished user interface
  • send coordinates by email
  • show coordinates on two different online map services

FAQ

  • Q: In "Locate Me" mode, which of the two figures of "ACCURACY" is which?
  • A: The first figure denotes the horizontal, the second figure denotes the vertical accuracy.

  • Q: When walking, I nearly always see a speed of 0.00 m/s, why?
  • A: While we don't really know (Swiss Grid gets this kind of data from the iPhones location services) we assume that you need at least to walk if not run to see a speed above 0.00 m/s. If you're on a bike (or in a car etc.), the speed display works just fine.

  • Q: What does "LAST FIX" mean?
  • A: It's the age of the last update from location service the application has got, shown in seconds.

  • Q: When starting the device or resetting the coordinates via options, it's always 600000 / 200000. How so?
  • A: With this, we pay some respect to the origins of CH1903. The Swiss Grid coordinate system has been defined not by an origin of 0 / 0 but of 600000 / 200000 which has been positioned on the old observatory in Berne... but hey, please read more about it on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_grid, thanks ;)
